Friday Update - November 19th

Good Afternoon,

Should we have cell phones in school?

We as a school community have been struggling with whether the students in Learning Expeditions should use their cell phones during class time.  I know that this question comes up time and time again.  I wanted to just let everyone know that cell phones are part of our everyday life and we as a school community know that kids rely on their phones.  I wanted to be sure that everyone knew the rule of the phones so that we are all on the same page and can support the kids in learning digital responsibility.

The students are more than welcome to have their phones on during the day but can only use them during the breaks (unless there is a specific plan for the student to text home).  If the teacher sees the phone out during class they will ask them to put it away.  If the student puts the phone away then all is good.  If the child does not put the phone away or chooses to bring it out again then the phone comes to the office.  My job is to call the parent and ask that they come to the school and pick up the phone.

If we could all support this process then the kids won’t be getting into trouble being distracted by their phones while they are in class.

Please don’t hesitate to call the school and ask any questions about the phone and this rule in the school.  We all think it’s important that children focus on their learning not on MineCraft.  Thank you for your cooperation.

IN THE KNOW SESSION - BEYOND BEHAVIOUR: WHEN IS IT MORE? WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE FOR AGES 13+

Why can it feel so tricky to tell if our kids are on track, going through a phase, as opposed to struggling with something more, or beyond behaviours? In this video conversation, a parent and a counsellor talk about the developmental stages of children who are 13 years or older.

The meeting will take place over zoom on Monday, November 22nd at 6:30pm. The group will watch the webinar together, with a facilitated discussion afterwards. To sign up, please follow this link: Beyond Behaviour Registration

Have a wonderful weekend.

Regards,
